What is an eclipse How to safely view an eclipse Eclipse timing graphic
What is an Eclipse and why do they happen? When the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, we have a lunar eclipse, where the Moon darkens in the shadow of the Earth. When the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, we have a solar eclipse. Whether or not we see a partial or full eclipse depends on where you are in relation to the path of the eclipse shadow. If you are outside of the path you see a partial eclipse. Whether the eclipse is an annular or total eclipse is the result of the distance between the Sun, Moon and Earth. The Earth orbits the Sun in an elliptical path resulting in the change in distance between the two. We are closer to the Sun in the northern winter and farther in the northern summer. The same is true of the Moon’s orbit around the Earth. varying the distance between them.
