Amazing Space Space Telescope Science Institute - Education Page

http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/education/amazing-space/

From Galileo to the Hubble Space Telescope

Page-by-page history of the telescope with occasional questions to answer from the reading.

About Telescopes from Amazing Space.  This site has simple information about telescopes from history to use.  Teaching tips and lesson plans included.  http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/resources/explorations/groundup/

Telescopes in Education http://www.telescopesineducation.com/

"The Telescopes in Education (TIE) program brings the opportunity to use a remotely controlled telescope and charge-coupled device (CCD) camera in a real-time, hands-on, interactive environment to students around the world." Live telescope images are available here.

Bradford Robotic Telescope Observatory Site http://www.telescope.org/

Remote telescope operation site for students.

"Users need only a standard Web browser to be able to submit observing requests, find out about our telescope and compare it with the large Apache Point remote telescope . They can look at an image taken from an observation with our telescope and compare it with one taken from a standard star database held at NASA. "

Faulkes Telescope project http://www.faulkes-telescope.com/

"Welcome to the Faulkes Telescope Project, home of telescopes for astronomy education in the UK. The project makes a robotic telescope in Hawaii, and another one in Australia, available to students enabling them to carry out their own research in astronomy, working with local universities and providing them with inspirational science activities."

This is NOT FREE.  If you really want use of a telescope for student research use it might be worth a look.

Blossoms of Science

The World's Largest Optical Telescopes http://www.seds.org/billa/bigeyes.html

This is a listing by SEDS of the larger telescopes around the world.  The list includes location and type and size of the telescopes.  This is not necessarily an educational site, but a good starting point for research project on telescopes.

Observatories and Telescopes in the World http://wwwospg.pg.infn.it/observatories.htm

Another long, extensive list of observatories.  Little information about the observatories.

StarDial http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/stardial/

This is a camera really, not a "telescope".  This automated camera takes a series of images of a swath of sky every night.  These images can be used by students to investigate the night sky over a period of time when facilities to do so are not otherwise available. Also check this related site http://www.tass-survey.org/tass/tass.shtml.

SPACE TELESCOPES

Spitzer Space Telescope http://sirtf.caltech.edu/

Formerly SIRTF.  Cool Cosmos http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/ is the education site connected with this space telescope that deals with IR and multi-wavelength astronomy.  Check that main site for pictures.

Hubble Space Telescope http://hubblesite.org/

Lots of information and picture from the Hubble Space Telescope.  Strangely no educational link for Hubble.  Check here: http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/education/amazing-space/ . There are some interesting things here: http://hubblesite.org/fun_.and._games/  And, where did that archive of Hubble images go?  Look here http://hubble.nasa.gov/multimedia/astronomy.php

GALEX - Galaxy Evolution Explorer http://www.galex.caltech.edu/

"GALEX will map the history of star formation in the Universe 80 percent of the way back to the Big Bang."  Their education site is here http://www.galex.caltech.edu/EDUCATION/education.html, but does not have much to offer.

GLAST http://www-glast.sonoma.edu/

Education site for Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope.  Some activities about galaxies here: http://www-glast.sonoma.edu/teachers/teachers.html

James Webb Space Telescope http://nextgen.stsci.edu/

This telescope is under development.  Check back for news.
